From the Director's Desk - March / April 2026

As winter gives way to spring—bringing longer days and renewed energy—the Mattituck-Laurel Library is looking forward to a season of connection, learning, and community. This spring, we invite you to take part in programs designed to support wellness, creativity, and civic engagement.

Our Tai Chi classes will be held on Fridays, March 6, 13, 20, and 27, and April 3, 10, 17, and 24, with sessions offered at 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. On Saturday, March 7, from 2:00–3:00 p.m., we are pleased to host an author talk with Mary Ellen Tomaszewski, featuring her book Savoring Time and musical interludes by Michael Reichert. We’ll conclude the winter season with an End of Winter Reading Celebration on Thursday, March 26, from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Patrons interested in emerging technology are also invited to attend A.I. for the Curious, a virtual program offered via Zoom on Friday, March 27. Sign up for all of our programs with our online calendar, drop by in person or give the library a call at 631-298-4134.

We are also pleased to welcome the Suffolk County Board of Elections on Monday, April 13, from 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., when patrons can learn about and test the new voting machines that will be used in the upcoming local primaries.

Behind the scenes, your library continues to be a busy and well-utilized community resource. In 2025, we welcomed 48,287 visits, served 3,532 library cardholders, and issued 228 new library cards. Patrons checked out more than 111,000 items across print and digital collections, used public computers over 3,100 times, and accessed free Wi-Fi more than 5,200 times. We also hosted 851 programs with 15,934 attendees, underscoring the library’s role as a true hub of community life and the importance of planning thoughtfully for its future.

From April 19–25, we will celebrate National Library Week with the theme “Find Your Joy.” Whether your joy comes from reading, learning something new, attending a program, using technology, or simply spending time in a welcoming space, we invite you to visit your community Library and rediscover all that it has to offer.

Looking ahead, we are thoughtfully re-engaging in our library renovation project and beginning a renewed conversation with the community about what comes next. To support this work, we will be hosting community charrettes on Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m. and Saturday May 16 at 10 a.m., offering opportunities for residents to share their priorities and help guide future planning for the Mattituck-Laurel Library.

Can’t wait to see you at the Library!

Warmly,

Shauna Scholl, Director
