Building the Future of Mattituck-Laurel Library Together
The Board of Trustees of Your Community Library have been thoroughly and thoughtfully engaged in assessing the current state of our building and considering how it serves our community. After carefully evaluating both the challenges and the opportunities presented by our aging facility, it’s clear that we must take action to ensure the Library remains a vibrant, relevant space for years to come. In response, we’re excited to propose the Library Renewal Project—a comprehensive initiative aimed at revitalizing and enhancing our beloved Library to better meet the needs of the people it serves.
The Library has long been a cornerstone of the community, a place where people of all ages come together to learn, connect, and explore. However, as our community grows and changes, so do its needs. Our current building, while full of history and character, is increasingly unable to accommodate the expanding range of programs and services that are essential to our mission. The Library Renewal Project addresses these issues by rehabilitating and upgrading the existing facility, improving both its infrastructure and its ability to support a wide range of programs.
The vision behind the Library Renewal Project encourages broad participation and accessibility, ensuring that the Library remains a welcoming space for everyone in the community. This project isn’t just about making improvements to a building—it’s about creating a modern, functional community hub that will serve as a space for learning, creativity, and connection for generations to come.
The Library Renewal Project is estimated to cost $5.5 million, a crucial investment that will enable us to address both the immediate and long-term needs of the Library. This funding will go toward rehabilitating the building’s infrastructure, enhancing its accessibility, and improving the spaces and resources available to our community. We are committed to ensuring that every dollar is spent wisely to create a space that meets the needs of all who rely on the Library.
The changes we’re proposing will make the Library more accessible, both physically and programmatically. From better-designed spaces that cater to specific needs, such as a dedicated Learning Lab, to improved technological infrastructure that supports more modern educational tools and resources, we’re focused on creating a Library that welcomes all users. Whether you're a student working on a project, a senior member of the community seeking quiet reflection, or a parent attending a children’s program, the Library should feel like a place that serves you—and everyone else—equally.
At the heart of the project is a commitment to functionality and sustainability. Our goal is to not only improve the Library's physical spaces but also to ensure that the building itself is equipped to serve future generations. This includes addressing key infrastructure needs—replacing outdated systems like the roof, HVAC, and plumbing—while also making sure the facility is energy-efficient, reliable, and resilient to the demands of the coming decades.
Equally important is our focus on creating a barrier-free Library. We know that for some, accessing the Library is a challenge due to the building's current limitations. The Renewal Project will make it easier for everyone to navigate the space, with improvements to lighting, design, and accessibility features that will ensure the Library is a truly inclusive community center.
This is an exciting opportunity for our Library, and we want you to be part of it. We invite you to join us for an informational open house on Wednesday, June 4th at 5:00 PM in the Library’s Meeting Room.
The Library Renewal Project will be brought to a vote on Tuesday, June 17th, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Together, we can ensure that our Library continues to be a place that serves and inspires everyone in our community. We look forward to seeing you at the hearing and to working together on this exciting next chapter for the Library!
