FAQ
Why is the Library beginning this planning initiative?
The Library building requires significant investment to address aging infrastructure and ensure it remains safe, functional, and accessible. Maintaining the building is a core responsibility of the Library Board of Trustees. This initiative also provides an opportunity to gather community input to help guide planning priorities and future use of library spaces.
Is this the same as the previous Library Renewal Project?
No. The previous proposal concluded with the community vote. This is a new planning initiative focused on addressing necessary building infrastructure while working with the community to help guide priorities and future planning.
Has the Library already decided to move forward with building improvements?
The Library must address critical building infrastructure needs as part of its responsibility to maintain a safe and functional public facility. Community input will help guide planning priorities, how spaces are used, and how the building can best serve the community.
What kinds of building needs are being evaluated?
The Library is evaluating essential building systems and infrastructure, which include HVAC and mechanical systems, roof and structural maintenance, accessibility improvements, electrical and technology infrastructure, and interior spaces to ensure they meet current and future needs.
How will community feedback be used?
Community feedback will help guide the Library’s planning process with its project team, including architects and professional consultants. While infrastructure needs must be addressed, community input will help inform how spaces are used, planning priorities, and overall project direction.
Will this result in higher taxes?
The Library Board of Trustees and administration are committed to being fiscally responsible and are carefully exploring all options with sensitivity to the financial impact on residents. This includes evaluating project scope carefully, planning responsibly, and pursuing funding strategies that help minimize the tax impact wherever possible. No funding decisions have been made.
Why is the Library asking for input now?
Community input at this stage allows the Library and its project team to incorporate community priorities into professional planning and ensure that future improvements reflect how residents want to use their library.
What happens after the community planning sessions?
Community feedback will be reviewed by Library leadership, the Board of Trustees, and the project team. This information will help guide planning concepts and inform future discussions and decisions.
Is anything going to change immediately?
No immediate changes are planned. This is a planning initiative focused on evaluating needs and developing responsible long-term plans. The Library will continue normal operations.
